It is amazing that you want to be the best person you can be, whatever that means to you. Of course, it really depends on your own definition of being better, and what you want to change in your life. Here are some easy ways you can start improving who you are and how you can have a positive impact on the world.
Define What You Want to Change
In order to become a better person, you need to define what that means for you. In what ways do you want to be a better person? What about who you are now is not as good as you believe you can be? Remember this is subjective and there are no right or wrong answers. It really comes down to who you think you are and who you want to be.
It can also help to write down or consider why you want to change, whether you have trouble holding onto friendships or relationships, or you just don’t feel confident with certain aspects of yourself.
Become a More Approachable Person
The first thing that can help you become a “better” person is to be more approachable. The reason you aren’t meeting new people might not have anything to do with who you are as a person, but rather because you aren’t approachable.
Some people subconsciously give off the energy that they don’t want people coming up to them and talking to them. This might be in your body language, where you cross your arms or stiffen your body, as if to tell others to leave you alone. Maybe you don’t smile or greet others who are around you, or you don’t talk much if someone is trying to start a conversation.
Listen and Pay Attention
Another great thing you can do is develop better listening skills. You might feel like you are a good listener, but then you don’t always remember everything someone has told you. If you are missing important details, then this is an area you can work on.
A good listener pays attention and is not distracted by other things. Don’t look at your phone if someone is talking to you. Look at them with good eye contact and a relaxed expression, and be engaged in the conversation.
Be Open and Honest
Good people are always honest, but in a kind way. You don’t need to insult others just to be honest with them, but being an open person who speaks from the heart, sets boundaries, and is honest with their friends and family is a great place to start.
Help Others Whenever You Can
Of course, if you want to be a better person, helping others when you can is a wonderful way to help your community. This might be helping friends to move when they ask you, driving a neighbor to the pharmacy, or giving your money or time to charities you feel touched by.
